Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has called for accelerated efforts towards the establishment of state police, describing it as a critical step in strengthening Nigeria’s security framework and addressing growing security challenges across the country.

The governor made the call during the governorship and legislative primary elections of the Allied Peoples Movement held in Ibadan.

Makinde urged the Federal Government to work closely with state assemblies to fast-track the legislative process required to create state police structures nationwide.

According to him, state policing would improve intelligence gathering at the grassroots level and enable quicker responses to security threats within local communities.

The governor maintained that states are better positioned to understand and address security challenges within their jurisdictions, adding that decentralised policing would enhance overall national security.

Makinde also reassured residents of Oyo State that efforts were ongoing to secure the release of abducted children and teachers from Oriire Local Government Area, expressing confidence that the victims would return safely.

He noted that security has remained a key priority of his administration and pledged continued investment in measures aimed at protecting lives and property across the state.

The governor thanked residents for their support throughout his years in office, saying their cooperation had contributed significantly to the achievements recorded by his administration.

Makinde also urged voters to support the APM governorship candidate, Bimbo Adekanmbi, in the 2027 general election.

He advised Adekanmbi to build his own leadership style and relationships, stressing that effective leadership should be guided by vision, unity and service rather than personal grievances or division.

The event was attended by several political leaders and government officials, including Deputy Governor Bayo Lawal and Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly Adebo Ogundoyin, alongside lawmakers, commissioners and party stakeholders.
