The Lagos State Government has intensified efforts to prevent domestic and sexual violence, with greater focus on addressing social attitudes and conditions that enable abuse.
Executive Secretary of the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency, Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi, disclosed this at a media briefing marking the 2026 Domestic and Sexual Violence Awareness Month.
Vivour-Adeniyi said the agency recorded 33,009 cases between September 2021 and July 2026, including 13,515 cases of domestic violence.
She added that 10,613 children suffered emotional abuse after witnessing violence in their homes.
The Executive Secretary cautioned that a 23.6 per cent decline in reported cases should not be interpreted as a corresponding reduction in domestic and sexual violence.
She said the state has provided support to survivors, conducted 501 rescue operations, secured more than 160 convictions and reached about 1.96 million residents across the 20 local government areas.
Activities for the 2026 awareness month include the “SGBV, It Ends With Us” campaign, the Turn Lagos Purple initiative and Safeguarding and Child Protection Week.
Residents have been urged to speak out against abuse and report cases through the agency’s toll-free line.
