A governorship aspirant of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Kaduna State, Shuaibu Idris, has rejected the outcome of the party’s governorship primary election, describing the exercise as fraudulent and riddled with irregularities.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, Idris accused the party’s primary election committee of conducting what he described as a flawed and compromised process that failed to meet basic democratic standards of fairness, transparency, and credibility.
The aspirant, who recently defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ADC, said he joined the party believing it would offer Nigerians a credible alternative political platform.
According to him, concerns about the conduct of the primary election were raised by aspirants and stakeholders during several meetings with the election committee before the exercise commenced.
“We raised concerns about the sloppy nature of the process but proceeded in good faith and signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Election Committee,” he stated.
Idris alleged that the exercise suffered from poor planning, inadequate logistics, insufficient funding, and a shortage of properly trained personnel.
He further claimed that support staff attached to contestants were allegedly used to supervise parts of the election process without proper orientation or training.
“This arrangement was clearly susceptible to manipulation, scheming, cheating, and other forms of malpractice. There was no way a credible result could emerge from such a process,” he said.
The governorship aspirant also alleged that election materials were hijacked during the exercise and claimed that thugs and weapons were deployed in some areas.
He accused some individuals of openly engaging in financial inducement and said he possesses documentary and video evidence to support his claims.
Idris additionally maintained that elections did not take place in several parts of Kaduna State during the exercise.
The controversy comes after Isah Ashiru was declared winner of the party’s governorship primary in the state.
