Leaders of the Group of Seven (G7) nations have welcomed efforts to ease tensions between the United States and Iran while shifting attention to growing concerns over China’s dominance in the global supply of critical minerals.

The discussions took place during the ongoing G7 Summit, where leaders described the emerging diplomatic agreement involving Iran as a positive step toward promoting stability and security in the Middle East.

While commending the progress in negotiations, world leaders also highlighted the strategic risks associated with China’s control of key mineral resources used in the production of electronics, renewable energy technologies, batteries, semiconductors and defence equipment.

According to officials at the summit, the security of critical mineral supply chains has become a major priority for G7 countries as they seek to reduce dependence on a single source for essential industrial materials.

Diplomats said several proposals are being considered, including expanding domestic mining capacity, supporting alternative supply chains and strengthening partnerships with resource-rich nations outside China’s sphere of influence.

Trade ministers at the summit also discussed coordinated investment strategies aimed at developing new mining projects and processing facilities to enhance supply chain resilience and protect long-term economic and national security interests.

The discussions reflect growing concerns among advanced economies about the vulnerability of global manufacturing and technology sectors to disruptions in the supply of critical minerals, many of which are currently dominated by China.

The issue has increasingly featured in international economic and security discussions as governments seek to diversify supply sources and secure access to resources considered vital for future industrial growth and energy transition goals.
