China has denied reports that Chinese entities supplied Iran with satellite images of a military base housing United States troops in Jordan.
The reports alleged that satellite images of the Muwaffaq Salti Air Base were provided to Tehran before and after Iranian missile strikes on the facility on July 17, which killed three American soldiers.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Guo Jiakun, rejected the allegations, describing them as groundless accusations without evidence.
The reports cited unnamed American officials but did not identify the Chinese entities allegedly involved or accuse the Chinese government of directly providing the images.
US President Donald Trump has sought to downplay the reports ahead of a planned visit by Chinese President Xi Jinping to the White House on September 24.
The development comes amid heightened scrutiny of China’s relationship with Iran. Washington had earlier sanctioned three China-based satellite companies for allegedly supporting Iranian military operations.
China remains a major economic and diplomatic partner of Iran and is one of the largest buyers of Iranian oil.
