United States President Donald Trump will attend a dignified transfer ceremony at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware as the remains of four American service members killed in the Iran war are returned home.
The ceremony honours military personnel who die during overseas operations and comes amid growing scrutiny of the conflict’s human and economic costs.
The four troops were identified as First Lieutenant Tyler James Feehan, Sergeant Angel S. Rampersad, Private Isabella Gonzales and Sergeant Michael Emmanuel Swinton.
Three of the service members were killed when an Iranian missile struck their sleeping quarters at Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan, while the fourth died during a controlled detonation involving an attack drone in Erbil, Iraq.
According to the US Defense Department, the conflict, which began in February, has claimed the lives of 18 American service members, injured more than 450 others and cost an estimated 37.5 billion dollars.
The Pentagon also says 100 troops have been injured since July 7, with most returning to active duty.
The ongoing conflict has intensified political debate in Washington over the administration’s strategy, while rising fuel prices and broader economic concerns continue to shape public opinion ahead of the November midterm elections.
