The Federal Medical Centre Abuja has completed 100 free cataract surgeries out of a targeted 500 for eligible patients as part of a pre-conference initiative of the Ophthalmological Society of Nigeria.
The three-day surgical camp, which began on August 27, is being held across selected hospitals in Abuja, including FMC Abuja, where it is coordinated by the Department of Ophthalmology under Dr. Mariam Abdullahi.
The initiative is aimed at reducing avoidable blindness and improving access to essential eye care, particularly for patients who may be unable to afford cataract surgery.
Beyond the free surgeries, patients are receiving comprehensive eye examinations, while those diagnosed with refractive errors and other conditions are provided with prescription glasses and necessary medications.
The programme precedes the Ophthalmological Society of Nigeria’s 51st Annual General Meeting and Scientific Conference, themed “Re-imaging Eye Care in the Digital Era,” which will examine the role of innovation and digital technology in improving eye care delivery.
Organisers say the initiative also demonstrates the importance of collaboration between professional medical organisations and healthcare institutions in addressing preventable visual impairment and expanding access to specialised healthcare.
