The United States says it has carried out air strikes on Iranian rocket launchers on Larak Island in the Strait of Hormuz, marking its first attacks on Iran since late July.
US Navy Captain Tim Hawkins says American forces struck two Iranian launchers after Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps personnel were observed preparing to launch rockets carrying sea mines into the strategic waterway.
The US Central Command described the operation as a limited and precise action aimed at preventing Iranian forces from laying additional mines in the Strait of Hormuz.
The latest strikes come days after the United States announced that it had completed clearing sea mines from international shipping routes in the strait.
Tehran has effectively blocked the Strait of Hormuz, a major global shipping route through which about one-fifth of the world’s oil passed before hostilities involving Iran, the United States and Israel began in February.
The conflict has continued despite an April ceasefire, with sporadic attacks around the Strait of Hormuz affecting prospects for a lasting peace agreement.
The closure of the waterway has also disrupted global trade, contributing to shortages and higher prices for energy and fertiliser.
Global crude oil prices rose by at least two per cent on Monday following the latest developments.
