Country music legend Dolly Parton has died at the age of 80 following a brief battle with cancer.

Her family announced that the singer died on Tuesday surrounded by loved ones, with her nephew, Brian Seaver, confirming the news on behalf of the Parton and Owens families.

Parton rose from a poor upbringing in East Tennessee to become one of the world’s most celebrated country music stars, with a career spanning more than six decades.

She sold more than 100 million records and won 11 Grammy Awards, with hit songs including “Jolene,” “9 to 5” and “I Will Always Love You.”

Beyond music, Parton enjoyed a successful acting career, appearing in films including “9 to 5” and “Steel Magnolias.” She also built the Dollywood entertainment brand and became widely recognised for her philanthropy.

Her Imagination Library programme has distributed more than 300 million free books to children in several countries, while she also supported medical research, education and poverty-relief initiatives.

Parton’s husband of nearly 60 years, Carl Dean, died in March 2025 at the age of 82.

Her team described her as a woman who spent her life bringing “joy, laughter, hope and integrity” to others, while tributes have begun pouring in following news of her death.
