Senegalese President Diomaye Faye has embarked on a diplomatic visit to Mali as part of efforts to rebuild strained relations between the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, and the Alliance of Sahel States, AES.
The visit to Bamako comes as Faye prepares to formally assume leadership of ECOWAS following his election as Chairman of the Authority of Heads of State and Government at the bloc’s 69th Ordinary Summit in Abuja.
His visit has raised hopes of renewed dialogue between ECOWAS and the military-led governments of Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger, which withdrew from the regional bloc and formed the Alliance of Sahel States.
During discussions with Mali’s transitional authorities, Faye reportedly stressed the importance of continued dialogue despite political differences, noting that regional peace, security and economic integration remain shared priorities across West Africa.
Although no formal announcement was made regarding Mali’s possible return to ECOWAS, diplomatic sources described the talks as constructive and indicated that both sides were willing to maintain communication.
The outreach comes amid growing security challenges across the Sahel, where insurgencies continue to threaten communities and regional stability.
There are also concerns that the continued separation between ECOWAS and the AES could weaken cooperation in fighting terrorism, regional trade, free movement and economic integration.
Since becoming Senegal’s president, Faye has advocated dialogue rather than prolonged isolation in dealing with the military governments of Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger.
Relations between ECOWAS and the three countries deteriorated following military coups, which prompted the regional bloc to impose sanctions and demand a return to constitutional rule. The military governments rejected the measures and eventually withdrew from ECOWAS.
Faye’s visit is therefore being viewed as an attempt to open a new chapter of diplomacy and prevent further fragmentation of West Africa as the region confronts growing security, economic and humanitarian challenges.
