14 Parties Sign Peace Accord Ahead of Osun Governorship Election

Candidates of 14 political parties contesting the August 15, 2026 Osun State governorship election have signed a peace accord, pledging to support a peaceful, credible and violence-free electoral process.

The accord was signed in Osogbo on Thursday at an event organised by the National Peace Committee, NPC.

Chairman of the National Peace Committee and former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, represented by Cardinal John Onaiyekan, said democracy thrives when political competition is guided by peace, restraint and respect for the rule of law.

He urged candidates, political parties and their supporters to conduct the remaining campaigns peacefully and responsibly.

Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Professor Joash Amupitan, called on all parties and candidates to respect the peace accord and warned that anyone attempting to disrupt the election or engage in vote buying would face the law.

The Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone XI, Akinyele Fasuba, who represented the Inspector General of Police, Olatunji Disu, assured residents of adequate security before, during and after the election.

Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, also reaffirmed his commitment to a free and fair election.

The August 15 governorship election will take place across the state’s 30 local government areas and the Modakeke Area Office, covering 332 registration areas and 3,763 polling units.

INEC says the certified voter register contains 2,339,233 eligible voters following the Automated Biometric Identification System exercise.
