The Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, has removed the Divisional Police Officer of Oyigbo Division, CSP Ugochukwu Ijeoma, from his position following allegations of extortion and misconduct.

The action followed a viral video by anti-police brutality activist, Harrison Gwamnishu, who accused the officer of extorting money from a suspect and unlawfully detaining a domestic violence victim.

In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, Grace Iringe-Koko, the Rivers State Police Command confirmed that the Commissioner of Police had directed the immediate removal of the officer from his post pending further investigations.

Gwamnishu had alleged that the DPO extorted ₦500,000 from a suspect arrested during a police operation, claiming the money was paid into the officer’s personal account before it was later refunded.

The activist also accused the officer of detaining a woman involved in a domestic violence dispute at the instance of her estranged husband.

According to the allegations, the woman had earlier reported a case of domestic violence to the police but no action was taken against her husband.

The activist further claimed that the woman was subsequently arrested and charged to court over a dispute involving custody of her children.

Following the emergence of the allegations, the Rivers State Police Command acknowledged the concerns raised and initiated administrative action against the officer.

The command assured members of the public that the allegations would be thoroughly investigated in line with established procedures.

It also reiterated its commitment to professionalism, accountability and respect for the rights of citizens.

The police urged residents to continue providing useful information and assured that any officer found culpable would face appropriate disciplinary measures.
