The United Kingdom Government has appointed Peter Vowles as the next British High Commissioner to Nigeria, succeeding Dr Richard Montgomery, who is expected to complete his tenure in September 2026.

The appointment was announced by the UK Government as part of its diplomatic postings, with Vowles set to assume office in Abuja later this year.

Vowles brings decades of diplomatic and international development experience to the role. He most recently served as the United Kingdom’s Ambassador to Zimbabwe from 2023 to 2026 and previously held the position of Ambassador to Myanmar between 2021 and 2022.

He has also occupied several senior leadership positions within the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), including Transformation Director and Director for Asia, the Caribbean and Overseas Territories.

His diplomatic and development career has included assignments in Bangladesh, India, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya and Zimbabwe, with a strong focus on international development, governance and strategic partnerships.

Reacting to his appointment, Vowles described Nigeria as a key partner of the United Kingdom and expressed his commitment to strengthening bilateral relations.

“I am honoured to be appointed as British High Commissioner to Nigeria. Nigeria is a country of immense importance to the United Kingdom, and I look forward to working closely with Nigerian partners to strengthen our relationship across trade, development and security,” he said.

The appointment comes as both countries continue to deepen cooperation in areas including trade, investment, security, education, climate action and economic development.
