President Bola Tinubu has appointed Tunji Disu as Acting Inspector-General of Police, following the resignation of Kayode Egbetokun.
The appointment was announced in a statement on Tuesday evening by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, who said the decision takes immediate effect.
According to the statement, the appointment was made in view of the prevailing security challenges in the country and in line with relevant legal provisions. The president is expected to convene a meeting of the Nigeria Police Council to formally consider Disu’s appointment as substantive Inspector-General of Police. His name will subsequently be forwarded to the Senate for confirmation, in accordance with the Police Act 2020.
Disu’s Career Profile
Before his elevation, Disu served as Assistant Inspector-General in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex, Alagbon, Lagos. He was promoted to the rank of AIG in 2025.
Over the course of his career in the Nigeria Police Force, Disu has held several strategic positions. He previously served as Commissioner of Police in Rivers State and later as Commissioner of Police for the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
He is also a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police and once headed the Intelligence Response Team of the Nigeria Police Force.
Born on April 13, 1966, in Lagos Island, Disu enlisted in the police on May 18, 1992. He has served as Divisional Police Officer in multiple locations across Ogun, Ondo, and Rivers states. His experience also includes leading Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) units and anti-kidnapping operations in several states.
In 2005, he led Nigeria’s first police contingent to the African Union Mission in Sudan, serving as contingent commander during a peacekeeping assignment in Darfur.
From June 2015 to August 2021, Disu commanded the Lagos State Rapid Response Squad, where he introduced a reform initiative branding officers as “The Good Guys” to promote professional and citizen-focused policing.
End of Egbetokun’s Tenure
Disu’s appointment brings to a close the tenure of Egbetokun, who was appointed the 22nd Inspector-General of Police on June 19, 2023. His confirmation followed later that year.
Egbetokun’s time in office attracted public debate, particularly over issues surrounding tenure and retirement provisions under the Police Act 2020. While critics questioned aspects of his continued stay in office, authorities maintained that his tenure aligned with the terms stated in his letter of appointment.
With Disu now at the helm in an acting capacity, attention shifts to the formal confirmation process and the administration’s broader strategy for addressing Nigeria’s security concerns.
