The Edo State Government has dismissed allegations by former Anambra State Governor and ADC figure, Peter Obi, that members of his political camp were attacked in the state.
In a statement, the government described the claim as false, malicious, and a misrepresentation of facts, insisting that no directive was issued by Governor Monday Okpebholo or any arm of the administration to target members of any political party.
The rebuttal was contained in a press statement released by the Chief Press Secretary, Dr. Patrick Ebojele, who maintained that Governor Okpebholo’s earlier remarks concerning high-profile political visits to Edo were guided strictly by his constitutional responsibility as Chief Security Officer of the state.
According to the statement, politically exposed persons are expected to notify relevant authorities before major engagements to ensure proper security coordination. The government argued that portraying such advisories as intimidation was misleading and politically motivated.
The Edo State Government also referenced a recent internal dispute within the African Democratic Congress, which reportedly required police intervention to restore order. It stressed that the incident was unrelated to the state government.
The administration urged political actors to verify facts before making public statements capable of heightening tensions, reaffirming its commitment to safeguarding constitutional rights, maintaining public safety, and prioritising development-driven governance over political persecution.
