Tunisia have dismissed head coach Sabri Lamouchi following the team’s heavy 5-1 defeat to Sweden at the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup and appointed French tactician Herve Renard as his replacement.

The Tunisian Football Federation announced the decision on Monday, confirming that Renard will take charge of the national team for the remainder of the tournament.

According to the federation, an agreement has been reached for the experienced French coach to lead the Carthage Eagles through the rest of their World Cup campaign.

“The president of the Tunisian Football Federation, Moez Nassari, announced that an official agreement had been reached with French coach Herve Renard for him to take charge of the national football team until the end of the 2026 World Cup,” a statement from Tunisia’s public broadcaster said.

Lamouchi, a former France international, was appointed head coach in January 2026 but leaves the role after a disappointing start to Tunisia’s World Cup campaign.

The North Africans suffered a crushing 5-1 defeat to Sweden in their opening Group F match, a result that has significantly dented their hopes of progressing to the knockout stage.

Renard arrives with a strong international pedigree and extensive experience in African and global football. He famously guided Saudi Arabia to a shock 2-1 victory over eventual champions Argentina at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

The 57-year-old has also enjoyed success on the African continent, winning the Africa Cup of Nations with both Zambia and Côte d’Ivoire, while most recently serving as head coach of the France women’s national team.

Tunisia now face a crucial Group F encounter against Japan on Saturday, where Renard will be tasked with reviving the team’s World Cup hopes and securing a positive result to keep qualification ambitions alive.
