17 Reps Members Defect to NDC Amid Ongoing Political Realignments

Date:

No fewer than 17 members of the House of Representatives have defected from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to the Nigeria Democratic Congress, in a move that underscores shifting political alliances ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The defections were formally announced during plenary on Tuesday.

Among the lawmakers who joined the NDC are Yusuf Datti, Uchenna Okonkwo, Adamu Wakili, Thaddeus Attah, George Ozodinobi, Lilian Orogbu, Oluwaseyi Sowunmi, Peter Aniekwe, Mukhtar Zakari, George Oluwande, Munachim Umezuruike, Emeka Idu, Jesse Onuakalusi, Ifeanyi Uzokwe, Afam Ogene, Murphy Omoruyi, and Abdulhakeem Ado.

In a related development, Leke Abejide also defected from the ADC to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The wave of defections comes shortly after former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, and former Kano State governor, Musa Kwankwaso, officially joined the NDC.

Both leaders had cited internal crises, persistent litigation, and deepening divisions within the ADC as reasons for their exit from the party.

They were received into the NDC by former Bayelsa State governor and party leader, Seriake Dickson, who described the party as stable and free from factional disputes.

The latest defections highlight the growing momentum within the NDC and reflect broader political realignments as key figures and stakeholders reposition ahead of the next general election cycle.
