West Africans deported from the United States to Ghana have filed a lawsuit at the ECOWAS Community Court of Justice, challenging the legality of third-country deportations under the United States’ immigration policy.

The suit was filed by a coalition of legal groups on behalf of 27 deportees, who argue that Ghana violated regional and domestic laws by facilitating their removal to countries where they could face persecution or other serious risks.

The legal team said at least 60 people have been deported to Ghana since September under the policy, which allows the United States to deport migrants to third countries when they cannot be returned directly to their countries of origin.

The plaintiffs are asking the ECOWAS court to declare the practice unlawful, insisting that no individual should be returned to a place where they face persecution, torture or threats to their safety.

The lawsuit comes as the United States continues to expand its immigration enforcement measures under President Donald Trump, with Ghana among the countries receiving deportees under the third-country arrangement.
