United States President Donald Trump says the US will be compensated for protecting the Strait of Hormuz after announcing that it would assume responsibility for securing the strategic waterway.
Trump said wealthy nations would reimburse the United States for the risks involved in safeguarding the vital shipping route, which has become a focal point of renewed tensions between Washington and Tehran.
The comments come amid fresh military exchanges between the United States and Iran, raising concerns over the security of one of the world’s busiest oil transit corridors.
Trump also criticised Iranian negotiators, accusing them of attempting to alter agreements reached during recent talks.
While Iran’s Revolutionary Guard has claimed the Strait of Hormuz is closed, the United States maintains that the waterway remains open to international maritime traffic.
