Nigeria has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening diplomatic relations with the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, DPRK, also known as North Korea, as both countries prepare to mark 50 years of bilateral relations.
The assurance came during a meeting in Abuja between the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Dunoma Umar Ahmed, and North Korea’s Ambassador-designate to Nigeria, Jo Yong Sam.
Ambassador Dunoma described relations between the two countries as longstanding and cordial, dating back to 1976. He proposed the resumption of cultural exchanges, cooperation in film and the creative arts, and the convening of the next Nigeria DPRK Joint Commission in Pyongyang.
The discussions also covered visa facilitation, employment opportunities for Nigerians at the DPRK Embassy in Abuja, and plans to establish a permanent Nigerian Embassy in Pyongyang.
North Korea reaffirmed its support for Nigeria’s bid for a non permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council and commended the country’s growing role in international affairs.
