The family of the late Mary Habila has rejected an autopsy and formally requested the release of her body for burial, while the Ebonyi State Police Command insists investigations into her death will continue.
In an affidavit filed before the High Court of Justice of Ebonyi State, her father, Tanko Habila Wisdom, said the family does not suspect any foul play and does not wish to pursue further investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death.
The family also appealed to authorities not to conduct an autopsy, insisting that her body should be released intact for burial.
Mary Habila, a staff member of the David Umahi Federal University of Medical Sciences who was seconded to the Federal Ministry of Works, died on June 27, 2026, in Uburu, Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.
Despite the family’s position, the Ebonyi State Police Command says it will continue its investigation, describing the case as sensitive and requiring a thorough examination to establish the actual cause of death.
Police said preliminary findings showed that Habila was part of the medical team attached to the Minister of Works and died while in Uburu.
The command said detectives have visited the scene, obtained statements from relevant persons and are making arrangements for a post-mortem examination, maintaining that the procedure is necessary to support the ongoing investigation.
The police also assured the public that the investigation would be transparent, thorough and impartial, adding that further updates would be provided as the case progresses.
