Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has ordered immediate drainage intervention in flood-affected communities along the Lekki corridor following an inspection of areas impacted by recent heavy rainfall.
The governor visited Ogombo, Monastery Road in Sangotedo, Chevron Drive, Ajiran and Gbetu Olorunkemi Road in Awoyaya alongside Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat and other government officials.
Speaking during the inspection, Sanwo-Olu attributed the flooding to heavy rainfall driven by climate change as well as human activities that obstruct natural waterways.
He said the state government would intensify dredging, excavation and drainage expansion projects to improve water flow and reduce the risk of flooding across affected communities.
The governor noted that many of the waterways and wetlands in the Lekki axis have existed for decades and serve as natural channels that discharge stormwater into the Lagos Lagoon.
He also sympathised with residents affected by the flooding, assured them of government support and urged those living in flood-prone areas to pay close attention to weather advisories and relocate to safer locations whenever necessary.
