Residents of Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, are battling a growing outbreak of acute conjunctivitis, commonly known as Apollo, with many seeking medical attention after attempts at self-medication failed to resolve the infection.
The highly infectious eye condition, which can be caused by viral or bacterial infections as well as allergic reactions, has left many residents experiencing redness, itching, burning and watery eyes.
Several patients, including children, have sought treatment at different eye clinics across the city as the condition continues to disrupt daily activities.
Ophthalmologist Mina Abdullahi says acute conjunctivitis can spread through contact with contaminated hands and personal items used by infected persons.
She also dismissed the misconception that the infection can be transmitted simply by looking into the eyes of an infected person.
Health experts have advised residents to maintain good personal hygiene and avoid sharing personal items such as towels and handkerchiefs.
They also urged those experiencing symptoms to seek early medical attention to reduce the spread of the infection and prevent complications.
