The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has criticised Anambra State Governor, Charles Soludo, over his remarks against former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, for advocating the release of the group’s leader, Nnamdi Kanu.

The development follows comments by Soludo, through his Special Adviser on Media, Ejimofor Opara, in which the governor reportedly described Obi’s demand for Kanu’s release as a move capable of undermining the judicial process.

Obi had recently reiterated his call for Kanu’s release during an engagement with Nigerians in Washington, D.C., arguing that the continued detention of the IPOB leader was unjustifiable.

Reacting in a statement issued by its spokesperson, Emma Powerful, IPOB accused the governor of inconsistency, citing his previous public support for Kanu’s freedom.

The group recalled that Soludo visited Kanu in detention in Abuja in January 2023 and publicly advocated his release. IPOB also referenced previous comments by Anambra State officials suggesting that the governor believed Kanu’s release would contribute to peace and stability in the South-East.

According to the group, Soludo’s current position contradicts his earlier stance on the matter.

IPOB argued that calls for Kanu’s release should not be interpreted as interference with judicial proceedings, noting that similar appeals had been made by political, religious and traditional leaders across the country.

The group expressed disappointment over what it described as a change in the governor’s position and urged public office holders to remain consistent in matters affecting justice, peace and national unity.

The controversy adds another dimension to the ongoing debate surrounding Kanu’s detention, which continues to attract reactions from political leaders, civil society groups and stakeholders across the country.
