Chinese authorities have detained 52 Singaporean nationals in Guangxi over suspected involvement in pyramid scheme activities and related offences.
Singapore’s Second Minister for Foreign Affairs, Sim Ann, says the country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and police are in contact with Chinese authorities to obtain more information about the cases.
She says Singapore will not interfere in China’s legal proceedings but is providing consular assistance to those detained.
Singapore’s embassy in Beijing and Consulate-General in Guangzhou have visited the detainees three times to check on their welfare and assist with communication between them and their families.
Sim also urged Singaporeans to exercise caution when considering business and investment opportunities, particularly schemes that require large upfront payments, recruitment of new participants or promise unusually high returns.
She said further details about the alleged offences involving the 52 Singaporeans could not be disclosed.
China’s Foreign Ministry says criminal cases involving foreign nationals are handled in accordance with Chinese law, while their legitimate rights and interests are protected.
