Senegal midfielder Pape Gueye has announced that he is taking a break from international football and will not represent his country while the current coaching staff remain in charge.
The 27-year-old made the decision following Senegal’s dramatic Round of 32 exit at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where they surrendered a two-goal advantage to lose to Belgium.
Gueye, who plays for Spanish La Liga side Villarreal, started the match but was substituted for Lamine Camara in the 66th minute.
The midfielder, who has earned 45 caps for Senegal, said he would speak in more detail about the team’s World Cup elimination at a later date but confirmed that he would not return to the national team under the present management.
Head coach Pape Thiaw has led Senegal since December 2024 and has remained under scrutiny following the controversy that resulted in the country’s 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title being stripped.
