Nigeria has recorded more than 85 per cent progress towards eliminating trachoma as a public health concern, with stakeholders meeting in Abuja to review achievements and strengthen efforts towards nationwide elimination.
The progress was highlighted at the AcceleraTE “Pause and Reflect” Learning Meeting, organised by Sightsavers in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare and other partners.
The Director and Programme Manager for Trachoma at the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Innocent Olobio, commended the collective efforts of government, development partners and communities in reducing the burden of the disease, while stressing the need to sustain interventions until elimination is achieved across the country.
Country Trachoma Coordinator for Sightsavers, Dr. Teyil Mshelia, highlighted key milestones recorded under the programme, including expanded access to treatment, improved disease surveillance and stronger partnerships.
Chairman of the National Trachoma Taskforce, Professor Adamu Mohammed, also praised the progress made and urged stakeholders to sustain collaboration and commitment to ensure Nigeria achieves and maintains trachoma elimination.
