The Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, has confirmed that the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) will replace its traditional khaki uniform with Adire fabric as part of ongoing reforms approved by the Federal Government.
The minister said the move is aimed at promoting local manufacturing and ensuring government spending supports the Nigerian economy by patronising Nigeria’s textile industry.
Olawande explained that Adire is produced locally in states including Ogun and Kwara, noting that the initiative will help channel government spending into the country’s economy.
He also disclosed that corps members will increasingly be posted based on their areas of specialisation, with graduates of education-related courses deployed to schools to improve service delivery and make the scheme more impactful.
On security, the minister said the government is considering posting prospective corps members to regions where they studied and are familiar with, particularly in areas affected by insecurity, to enhance safety and reduce unnecessary redeployments.
Olawande dismissed reports that the military would be removed from the NYSC, clarifying that while the scheme’s operational leadership will be headed by a civilian, the military will continue to provide security support for corps members nationwide.
He said the reforms, approved by the Federal Executive Council, are aimed at repositioning the NYSC into a skills-oriented, productivity-driven and youth empowerment institution that supports Nigeria’s economic development.
