Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Mallam Shehu Dikko, has announced that Super Eagles head coach, Eric Chelle, will remain in charge of the senior national team after reaching an agreement on a new contract.
Chelle’s initial two-year contract is due to expire at the end of 2026, with negotiations over an improved deal having continued in recent months.
According to Dikko, the new arrangement reflects the confidence of the football authorities in the Franco-Malian tactician’s ability to lead Nigerian football to greater heights.
In addition to his role with the Super Eagles, Chelle has also been handed responsibility for the Under-23 Eagles as part of efforts to ensure continuity and a seamless transition of players between the junior and senior national teams.
Meanwhile, the National Sports Commission has announced a landmark increase in prize money for the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL).
Under the new arrangement, next season’s league champions will receive a record one billion naira, representing a five-fold increase from the current prize of two hundred million naira.
The commission said the decision forms part of sweeping reforms aimed at transforming domestic football, improving competitiveness and attracting greater investment into the Nigeria Premier Football League.
The enhanced prize package is also expected to motivate clubs, improve the welfare of players and officials, and further strengthen the development of football in the country.
