FIFA President Gianni Infantino has apologised for what he described as mistakes surrounding the controversial proposal to sell stakes in FIFA competitions to private investors but has retained the support of the organisation’s leadership.
Infantino convened a meeting of FIFA’s management board at the governing body’s Africa office in Rabat, Morocco, following widespread criticism of the now-abandoned FIFA Forward Enterprise proposal.
Following the meeting, FIFA released a statement reaffirming its confidence in Infantino’s leadership.
The proposal had attracted strong opposition, with UEFA saying it had lost confidence in the FIFA president and describing the plan as an opaque, back-room deal.
FIFA Secretary General Mattias Grafström also acknowledged the controversy in an internal memo, describing the episode as regrettable.
Despite the criticism, Grafström and the FIFA management board reaffirmed their full support for Infantino.
Infantino and Grafström also sent a joint letter to FIFA’s vice-presidents, council members and all 211 member associations, offering a sincere apology for the mistakes made and assuring them that similar errors would not be repeated.
