Japan has approved new rules requiring AI generated images and videos used during election campaigns to be clearly labelled in a move aimed at protecting the integrity of the country’s electoral process.
The legislation also prohibits the spread of false or misleading information about political candidates on social media platforms.
Japanese authorities said the new measures are intended to promote free and fair elections while balancing the protection of free speech.
The rules, approved by parliament, will take effect in March and were introduced following concerns over the use of AI generated content during recent political campaigns.
Under the new framework, the government will issue guidelines for social media platforms and require annual reports on how the rules are being implemented, although no penalties have been introduced for non compliance.
