The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has filed a suit against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), seeking a court order compelling the commission to investigate allegations that about ₦800 billion from Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) allocations was diverted by APC governors to finance political and campaign activities.
Filed before the Federal High Court in Abuja, the suit asks INEC to determine whether the alleged deductions breached Nigeria’s electoral laws and to compel the disclosure of any campaign-related contributions, including the identities of donors and the sources of the funds.
SERAP is also asking the court to direct INEC to review compliance with campaign finance provisions under the Electoral Act ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The organisation argued that the allegations raise serious concerns about transparency, accountability and the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral process, warning that the use of public funds for partisan activities could undermine public confidence in the credibility of future elections.
SERAP maintained that Nigerians have a right to know how political campaigns are funded and urged INEC to fully exercise its constitutional powers to regulate political financing and enforce compliance with the law.
No date has been fixed for the hearing of the case.
