Former Manchester United forward Diego Forlán has been appointed interim head coach of the Uruguay national football team following the country’s disappointing 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign.
Uruguay exited the tournament at the group stage after draws against Saudi Arabia and Cape Verde before a 1-0 defeat to Spain in their final group match, leading to the resignation of Marcelo Bielsa.
The Uruguayan Football Association announced Forlán’s appointment on Sunday, with the former striker taking charge of the national team until March 2027.
In addition to leading the senior team, Forlán will oversee Uruguay’s campaign at the 2027 South American Under-20 Championship as part of efforts to develop the country’s next generation of football talent.
