A Federal High Court in Abuja has rejected an application by former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, seeking a review of the bail conditions imposed on him in his ongoing wiretapping trial.
The ruling came as the Department of State Services (DSS) formally closed its case against the former governor in the alleged cybercrime and national security matter.
El-Rufai’s legal team had asked the court to vary the bail conditions, arguing that some of the requirements were too stringent and difficult to fulfil.
The defence specifically challenged the requirement for a Level 17 federal civil servant with property in Abuja’s Maitama or Asokoro districts to serve as surety, as well as the need for verification and attestation letters from the Kaduna State Traditional Council.
However, the prosecution opposed the application, maintaining that the conditions were reasonable and achievable.
Delivering his ruling, Justice Abdulmalik agreed with the prosecution and held that suitable individuals who meet the bail requirements are available.
The court subsequently declined to alter the conditions, insisting that the original terms remain in force.
Meanwhile, the DSS informed the court that it had concluded the presentation of its evidence and would not be calling additional witnesses in the matter.
El-Rufai is facing charges under the Cybercrimes Act and other related laws over allegations of unlawful interception of communications involving the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu.
The case has attracted significant public attention due to the former governor’s political profile and comments he allegedly made concerning the matter.
The court also noted that the prosecution relied on materials, including public statements attributed to El-Rufai, as part of its evidentiary record.
El-Rufai had earlier been granted bail in the sum of ₦100 million with conditions that include the surrender of his international passport and mandatory reporting to the DSS.
The restrictions remain in place following the court’s latest ruling.
