Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma has distanced himself from comments made by his aide, Ambrose Nwogwugwu, in response to an appeal by Nigerian music star Davido ahead of the August 15 Osun State governorship election.
Davido had called on Uzodimma, who serves as Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum and the APC Osun Governorship Campaign Council, to use his influence to promote a peaceful election.
Nwogwugwu responded by describing the singer’s appeal as “emotional blackmail”, but Uzodimma said the comments were the aide’s personal opinion and did not represent his position or that of the campaign council.
The governor reassured Davido that their relationship remained intact, describing the singer as his son while noting that neither of them is an Osun voter.
Uzodimma explained that his involvement in the election is in his capacity as an APC leader supporting the party’s governorship candidate, Asiwaju Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji.
He reiterated the APC’s commitment to a peaceful, credible, free and fair election while maintaining that the party has the democratic right to campaign and seek the support of Osun voters.
The governor urged Davido and the public to disregard his aide’s comments, saying the clarification was necessary to prevent unnecessary tension ahead of the election.
