Suspected terrorists operating around the Dansadau axis of Zamfara State have ambushed commuters travelling along the Magami-Dansadau road, killing an unspecified number of travellers and abducting several others.

A resident of Magami, who pleaded anonymity for security reasons, said the attack occurred on Sunday between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. when gunmen opened fire on vehicles travelling along the route.

According to the resident, at least 10 bodies had been recovered as of the time of filing this report.

“As you are aware, the road from Magami to Dansadau requires the escort of security agents to safely lead commuters to their communities. The commuters waited for about seven hours before security operatives arrived to escort them to Dansadau.

“While they were on their way, suspected bandits launched an attack on the convoy, targeting the operational vehicle,” the source said.

The resident explained that the convoy came under attack near Dogosatsin village, where the gunmen reportedly opened fire on the security escort vehicle, killing security personnel, members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), and some commuters.

“We recovered 10 dead bodies and are still searching for others. Those injured were admitted at the Magami General Hospital but were later referred to Gusau. However, they are still there because there is no security escort yet to move them to Gusau,” the source added.

The attackers were also said to have abducted an unspecified number of passengers travelling to nearby communities before troops engaged them and forced them into the bush.

The spokesperson for the Zamfara State Police Command, Yazid Abubakar, confirmed awareness of the incident but said casualty figures were still being verified.

The Gusau-Magami-Dansadau road remains one of the most dangerous routes in Zamfara State, with recurring cases of bandit attacks, kidnappings and killings.

Last year, Governor Dauda Lawal flagged off the construction of the 108-kilometre road linking the communities as part of efforts to improve transportation and security in the area.

Residents of the affected communities often depend on military and police escorts when travelling between Dansadau and Gusau due to persistent insecurity along the corridor.
