The Social Democratic Party, SDP, governorship candidate in Ekiti State, Ambassador Isaac Adedayo Alade, has withdrawn his petition challenging the victory of Governor Biodun Oyebanji in the June 20 governorship election.
Alade’s counsel, Barrister Umar Abdulhamid, informed the Ekiti State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal in Ado-Ekiti that his client had filed a motion seeking to discontinue the case.
The three-member tribunal, chaired by Justice Abubakar Idris Kutigi, granted the application and struck Alade’s name out of the petition.
Counsel to the SDP, Adewole Adebayo, expressed surprise at the development, saying he was unaware of the candidate’s decision. He, however, maintained that the party would continue with the petition.
Counsel to Governor Oyebanji, Adetunji Oso, did not oppose the withdrawal, saying the candidate was exercising his legal right under the Electoral Act, 2026.
Meanwhile, the SDP presented seven witnesses during Monday’s proceedings, with testimonies focusing on alleged vote buying, disturbances at polling units and the conduct of party agents during the election.
The tribunal subsequently granted a short adjournment after the petitioners requested additional time to present their case.
