The Lagos State Government has launched a private health insurance plan and announced that enforcement of mandatory health insurance will begin on January 1, 2027.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu announced this at the launch of the Lagos Private Health Plan Partnership at the Lagos Continental Hotel, Victoria Island.
He gave employers, workers and residents until December 31, 2026, to obtain appropriate health insurance coverage before enforcement begins.
The governor said the new plan would complement the existing Ilera Eko scheme by providing additional options for salaried workers and corporate organisations.
Commissioner for Health, Professor Akin Abayomi, said mandatory participation would help spread healthcare costs across a larger population and reduce the financial burden on households.
He added that Lagos was targeting an increase in the number of insured residents from about two million to at least 10 million.
Meanwhile, Chairman of the Lagos State Health Management Agency Governing Board, Dr Adebayo Adedewe, said funding for the Lagos State Health Equity Fund had increased from one billion naira to three billion naira. The fund aims to enrol 500,000 vulnerable residents.
The state government said enrolment would be supported through a digital platform, while operational guidelines would clarify contributions and minimum benefits.
