The Lagos State Ministry of Health has reassured residents that there is no confirmed case of Ebola in the state, despite the ongoing outbreak reported in parts of Central and East Africa.
Commissioner for Health, Akin Abayomi, disclosed this in a statement issued on behalf of the ministry, stating that Lagos remains on high alert and has activated its biosecurity and emergency response systems.
According to the ministry, the Ebola outbreak has so far been reported in Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda, with hundreds of suspected cases and significant fatalities recorded.
Abayomi said the state’s preparedness strategy, first tested during the 2014 Ebola outbreak and strengthened during the COVID-19 pandemic, remains fully operational.
He explained that the Lagos State Incident Command System, led by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, alongside the Lagos State Emergency Operations Centre, continues to monitor developments and coordinate disease surveillance activities across the state.
The commissioner added that the Infectious Disease Hospital in Yaba remains on standby with dedicated isolation and intensive care facilities, while the Biosafety Level-3 Laboratory and Biobank Facility have intensified surveillance for high-risk infectious diseases.
He further disclosed that the state government is collaborating with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, Port Health Authorities, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, and other federal agencies to strengthen monitoring at airports and entry points.
According to the ministry, travellers arriving from affected regions are undergoing heightened public health screening as part of precautionary measures.
The government also stated that community health workers, civil society groups, and local associations have been integrated into the disease surveillance system to support early detection and information sharing.
Emergency medical supplies, including personal protective equipment and sanitisers, have also been strategically deployed, while ambulance services remain on standby for rapid response.
The state government urged residents, particularly those returning from affected countries or those who recently had contact with travellers from the region, to seek immediate medical advice if they experience symptoms associated with the disease.
Residents were encouraged to use designated emergency lines for support and reporting.
