Ten people have died and six others sustained injuries in a fatal road crash at Saapade Bridge along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State.
The Federal Road Safety Corps says the accident involved a Sinotruk truck and a Toyota Hiace bus carrying 18 occupants.
According to the FRSC, the crash claimed the lives of nine adult males and one male child, while four adult males and two adult females sustained varying degrees of injuries. Two other occupants escaped unhurt.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the accident was caused by speeding, wrongful overtaking and dangerous driving.
The Corps said the truck driver allegedly reversed on the highway after missing his route, while the approaching bus, travelling at high speed, attempted to pass through the limited space and collided with the truck.
FRSC rescue teams evacuated the injured victims to Victory Hospital, Ogere, for treatment, while the bodies of the deceased were deposited at the FOS Mortuary in Ipara.
The crashed vehicles have been taken into police custody for further investigation.
The Ogun State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Oludare Ogunjobi, commiserated with the families of the victims and urged motorists, especially commercial drivers and truck operators, to avoid reversing on highways, excessive speeding and other dangerous driving practices.
The Corps also advised road users to obey traffic regulations and use designated turning points whenever they miss their routes to prevent avoidable accidents.
