The Ogun State Police Command has confirmed that the driver of the Lexus SUV involved in the fatal road accident that claimed the lives of two members of Anthony Joshua’s entourage is currently in police custody.
The police spokesperson in the state, Oluseyi Babaseyi, disclosed that the driver is being detained as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
“The driver of the Lexus SUV is currently in custody in connection with the Anthony Joshua accident case. Investigations are ongoing,” Babaseyi said.
The incident occurred on Monday near the Sinoma area of Sagamu, Ogun State, along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, as Joshua and three associates were travelling from Lagos. The SUV reportedly collided with a stationary truck parked along the road.
While the former heavyweight boxing champion sustained minor injuries in the crash, his strength and conditioning coach, Sina Ghami, and his personal trainer, Kevin Latif Ayodele, died from injuries sustained in the accident.
Preliminary findings by the Federal Road Safety Corps indicated that excessive speed and wrongful overtaking may have contributed to the crash. However, the Ogun State Police Command cited a tyre burst as the immediate cause of the collision, noting that investigations were still ongoing to establish full responsibility.
Joshua was treated at Lagoon Hospital in Ikoyi, Lagos, and was discharged on Wednesday after receiving medical attention. Authorities said further updates would be provided as investigations progress.
