Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has joined Catholic leaders, government officials and other mourners in receiving the remains of the late Archbishop of Benin City, Most Reverend Augustine Obiora Akubeze.
Archbishop Akubeze, who passed away on July 9 at the age of 69, was brought back to Benin City on Tuesday as members of the Catholic community and residents gathered to pay their respects.
The remains were formally received by the Apostolic Administrator of the Catholic Archdiocese of Benin City, Bishop Donatus Ogun, together with priests, Papal Knights and members of the Knights of St. Mulumba.
Governor Okpebholo attended the reception alongside the Secretary to the State Government, Umar Musa Ikhilor, Edo State APC Chairman Jarret Tenebe and other government officials.
Archbishop Akubeze was born on August 25, 1956, and ordained a Catholic priest in 1987. In 2006, he became the pioneer Bishop of Uromi before Pope Benedict XVI appointed him Archbishop of Benin City in 2011.
He also led the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria as president between 2018 and 2022, during a ministry marked by years of service to the Catholic Church and wider society.
With preparations for his funeral rites underway, the return of Archbishop Akubeze’s remains to Benin City begins a period of mourning and reflection on his decades of religious service and contributions to the people of Edo State.
