The Federal Government is strengthening efforts to tackle insecurity, displacement and social tensions through new partnerships focused on peacebuilding and community resilience.
The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Dunoma Umar Ahmed, received a delegation from the Italy based Community of Sant’Egidio in Abuja to discuss cooperation in peacebuilding, mediation, interfaith dialogue and humanitarian assistance.
The delegation, led by Professors Jan De Volder and Stefano Orlando, highlighted the organisation’s ongoing interventions across several Nigerian states, including programmes on education, poverty reduction, community dialogue and support for vulnerable populations.
A key outcome of the meeting was a proposal to establish a formal framework for collaboration between Nigeria and the Community of Sant’Egidio, an internationally recognised faith based organisation known for its peace mediation efforts in conflict affected regions.
Ambassador Ahmed welcomed the proposal and reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to partnerships that promote peaceful coexistence, social inclusion and conflict prevention.
He identified youth empowerment, vocational training, support for internally displaced persons, healthcare and grassroots peacebuilding initiatives as key areas for future collaboration.
The discussions come as Nigeria continues to seek innovative and community driven solutions to address the root causes of conflict and promote lasting peace across the country.
