The Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB) has reaffirmed its commitment to developing indigenous engineering capacity by rewarding outstanding innovation at the maiden Nigerian Engineering Olympiad.
At the grand finale held in Lagos, Team Mavericks of Modibbo Adama University, Yola, emerged overall winners with their “Sarafa Community Security Alert”, a community-based rapid alert system that connects households through low-cost devices to notify neighbours and emergency responders during security incidents.
The team received a cash prize of ₦50 million, while the university’s Faculty of Engineering will benefit from the construction of a Centre of Excellence Building sponsored by the NCDMB.
Team Aurora of the University of Ibadan finished as first runners-up with their “Aurora Birth Health Tech Suite,” an innovation designed to reduce neonatal deaths caused by birth asphyxia in low-resource healthcare settings. The team received ₦30 million and engineering equipment worth ₦75 million.
Team Fortizo of the University of Jos came third with “FarmAnchor,” a solar-powered, artificial intelligence-enabled device that helps smallholder farmers detect crop pests, diseases and soil deficiencies. The team received ₦20 million and engineering equipment valued at ₦50 million.
Team Flameless of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, secured fourth place with its “Flameless” containerised plug-and-play power solution that converts flare gas into electricity for nearby communities. The team received ₦10 million.
Speaking on behalf of the Executive Secretary of the NCDMB, Engr. Felix Omatsola Ogbe, the Director of Planning, Research and Statistics, Mr. Omomehin Ajimijaye, described the competition as a celebration of innovation and the immense potential of Nigerian youths to solve real-world challenges through science and engineering.
He also commended all participating teams and appreciated the board’s partners for contributing to the success of the initiative.
