The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has warned Commissioners of Police across the country against illegal detention of suspects, abuse of office, corruption and other forms of misconduct, stressing that such actions will not be tolerated.
Speaking at a meeting with Police Strategic Managers at the Goodluck Ebele Jonathan Peacekeeping Hall in Abuja, the IGP charged police commanders to uphold professionalism, respect human rights and ensure strict compliance with due process.
He said Commissioners of Police, as strategic commanders, have a responsibility to build public confidence by setting high standards of leadership, discipline and accountability within their commands.
The IGP also directed police commissioners to strengthen community policing by engaging traditional rulers, religious leaders, youth and women groups, as well as other community stakeholders, describing such partnerships as essential for effective crime prevention.
He stressed that modern policing requires operational competence, sound judgment, emotional intelligence and effective communication, adding that misconduct by officers undermines the Nigeria Police Force’s efforts to deliver quality service.
