Ibom Air has denied claims that it exercises monopoly over operations at the Victor Attah International Airport or prevents other airlines from operating from the facility.
The airline was responding to reports about its dominant market position on the Uyo-Abuja and Uyo-Lagos routes.
In a statement, Ibom Air said it has no regulatory authority to determine which airlines can operate from Uyo or any other airport in Nigeria.
It cited the Civil Aviation Act 2022, noting that the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority is responsible for regulating civil aviation and approving airline operations in the country.
The airline also clarified that its previous decisions to suspend or adjust flights to some destinations were based on operational requirements, including aircraft maintenance, and should not be interpreted as attempts to maintain a monopoly.
It added that factors such as aircraft availability, fuel logistics, airport infrastructure, scheduling and regulatory requirements can affect flight frequency without indicating that one airline controls access to an airport.
Ibom Air says it welcomes competition, arguing that more airlines operating from Uyo would provide passengers with more travel options, improve connectivity and strengthen the aviation and tourism economy of Akwa Ibom and the wider South-South region.
The airline stressed that its status as the home-based carrier does not give it ownership or control of the Victor Attah International Airport or the authority to decide which other airlines can operate there.
