The FIFA has sanctioned Nigeria and the Democratic Republic of the Congo following fan-related incidents during their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying playoff match in November.
In a disciplinary report released by the global football body, both countries were found to have breached provisions of the FIFA Disciplinary Code due to the conduct of their supporters during the African qualifying playoff final, which DR Congo won on penalties.
Fines Imposed
The Nigeria Football Federation was fined 1,000 Swiss francs after Nigerian fans were reported to have thrown objects onto the pitch during the match.
FIFA ruled that the incident violated Articles 17 and 17.2.b of its disciplinary code.
Meanwhile, the Congolese Association Football Federation received a heavier fine of 5,000 Swiss francs after supporters were found guilty of using laser pointers during the game, which FIFA said contravened Article 17.2.d of the code.
Protest Over Player Eligibility
The disciplinary report did not address a separate protest filed by the Nigeria Football Federation, which accused DR Congo of fielding ineligible players during the playoff.
The Nigerian body had earlier petitioned FIFA, alleging that the Congolese federation misled authorities during the process of clearing certain players for national team duty.
According to the NFF, some of the players who featured in the match were fraudulently registered, raising questions about their citizenship status.
Next Playoff Match
While FIFA is yet to rule on the eligibility complaint, DR Congo has already announced its squad for the upcoming intercontinental playoff later this month.
The Congolese side will face the winner of the encounter between the Jamaica national football team and the New Caledonia national football team, with the victor securing one of the final spots at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
