The Cross River State Emergency Management Agency has begun arrangements to assess the damage caused by the fire that affected parts of the SPAR shopping complex at Calabar Mall on Saturday.
The assessment is expected to determine the extent of losses and identify the immediate needs of business owners and other victims affected by the incident.
The fire also raised concerns over firefighting capacity after responding officials reportedly required reinforcement due to limited equipment available to contain the blaze.
Governor Bassey Otu has assured affected businesses of the state government’s support, promising interventions to reduce the impact of the fire and assist shop owners in rebuilding their businesses.
SPAR says it is cooperating with state emergency authorities to determine the cause of the fire. The mall remains temporarily closed while structural assessments and safety reviews are carried out.
Cross River State Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Ekpeyong Cobham, also sympathised with the management and traders, as affected shop owners appealed for government assistance following the loss of their livelihoods.
Deputy Governor Peter Odey has since inspected the damaged facility on behalf of Governor Otu.
The state government says recovery support, including financial and administrative interventions, will be considered to help affected businesses recover from the incident.
