European leaders have paid tribute to Keir Starmer following his announcement that he will step down as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and leader of the Labour Party.
Starmer announced his resignation on Monday, bringing to an end a premiership marked by efforts to rebuild Britain’s relations with Europe and strengthen its role on the international stage.
During his time in office, Starmer pursued closer diplomatic and economic cooperation with the European Union while maintaining Britain’s position outside the bloc.
He also emerged as a leading supporter of Ukraine, working closely with European leaders to coordinate assistance for Kyiv amid its ongoing conflict with Russia.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen praised Starmer’s leadership and commitment to European security, saying his efforts helped strengthen cooperation across the continent and reinforce support for Ukraine.
Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin commended the outgoing leader for improving relations between Ireland and the United Kingdom while encouraging stronger engagement between Britain and the European Union.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy also expressed appreciation for Starmer’s support, describing him as a reliable ally who consistently backed Ukraine throughout his tenure.
The German government described Starmer as a trusted and dependable partner, highlighting the strong working relationship that developed between Berlin and London during his time in office.
Starmer became Prime Minister in 2024 after leading Labour to a decisive election victory that ended years of Conservative rule.
He inherited an economy facing significant challenges and a country still dealing with divisions that followed Brexit.
While he recorded notable achievements in foreign policy and international diplomacy, Starmer faced increasing political pressure at home as public dissatisfaction grew over domestic issues.
US President Donald Trump was among those who criticised the departing British leader, arguing that his administration had failed to adequately address immigration and energy concerns.
In Russia, reactions were mixed, with comments from a senior Kremlin envoy suggesting that Starmer’s critics had contributed to his political downfall, although Russian officials later clarified that the remarks did not represent an official government position.
As tributes continue from across Europe, Starmer leaves office having played a significant role in restoring Britain’s relationships with key allies while navigating mounting political challenges at home.
