The Delta State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to developing the state’s blue economy through improved maritime infrastructure and stronger partnerships with international development agencies.

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori stated this when he received a delegation from the European Union to Nigeria and ECOWAS, led by Massimo De Luca.

Represented by his Deputy, Sir Monday Onyeme, the Governor welcomed plans for the development of Burutu Port as part of a proposed coastal transportation corridor linking Lagos through Burutu to Onitsha and Ajaokuta.

He says the development of waterways and maritime transportation presents significant opportunities for Delta State and could support sustainable economic growth.

The Governor also welcomed the delegation’s commitment to supporting persons living with disabilities through initiatives aimed at improving their independence and productivity.

Earlier, De Luca said the delegation’s visit focused on the Blue Economy and the Sea-Link Project, which seeks to strengthen coastal and inland waterway transportation.

He says the existing Burutu Port is strategically located but will require substantial rehabilitation to maximise its potential for maritime and inland waterway transportation.

According to him, efforts are underway to develop a financing structure involving several partners, with investments expected to cover barges and port infrastructure, particularly at Burutu.

The proposed Sea-Link route would connect Lagos through the coastal corridor to Burutu before extending through the River Niger to Onitsha and towards Ajaokuta, with the potential to position Burutu for international maritime trade.
